Gastric sleeve lunch ideas: Healthy, easy, delicious and small enough to eat!
October 31, 2016Hair loss after gastric sleeve is a common concern and something I often get asked about both before and after surgery. Not everyone will experience hair loss but it is quite common.
So why does hair loss happen?
Hair loss is a natural response to stress. This can be stress of any kind, from illness to surgery, from grief to nutrient deficiencies. When you go through the process of a sleeve gastrectomy you’re exposing your body to a huge stress – from the surgery itself, the change in diet and the rapid weight loss.
How long will it go for?
Most people who experience hair loss will find it happens within the first 6 months after surgery. It won’t generally continue for more than 6 months if your diet is adequate. I often find that the hair loss slows and stops as your weight loss starts to slow, too and your body is adjusting to the surgery.
Will it grow back?
Hair should re-grow with time. Often you’ll start to see little baby ‘fluffy’ hairs appear as your weight loss is slowing down. Most people will gain the majority of the hair they lost back within the first 12-18 months as long as their nutrition after surgery is up to scratch.
What if it doesn’t stop?
If hair loss continues for more than 1 year after the surgery, then hair loss may be due to nutritional deficiencies. Make sure you have regular blood tests to monitor your nutritional status after surgery and are eating good quality food and taking the supplements advised by your dietitian as well.
How can I minimise the risk that this will happen to me?
- Eat a variety of healthy, nutrient rich foods each day – go for quality over quantity.
- Take vitamin and mineral supplements as recommended by your weight loss surgeon, doctor or dietitian
- Make sure you’re eating enough protein
What about hair skin and nails supplements?
The evidence that these will help prevent hair loss after a gastric sleeve is minimal. It won’t hurt to take them, but it might not help either – if you’re not sure, have a chat with your dietitian.
