Slider foods – what to stay away from & why
April 29, 2019As an LWAS Community member, you have exclusive access to my top product picks. This means you can be sure you’re choosing the best options when choosing a frozen meal.
This was by no means an exhaustive list of all the frozen meals on the market (that would be almost impossible!) If you haven’t yet read my guide to choosing a cereal, click here to read it now – it gives you step-by-step guidance for reading labels of the cereals in your supermarket.
I’ve given you six winners (in no particular order), which met 3 or 4 out of my criteria for the ‘per 100g’ column on the Nutrition Information Panel. However, these still had 350-380g serve size, which is a little bigger than I’d like.

Special mentions also go to the Annabel Karmel range which are designed for kids so they have smaller serve sizes are were among the very few that met the criteria for sodium. Another special mention goes to the Lean Cuisine Balance range for serve size – most of these still met 3 of the criteria for nutrition too, so are not a bad option!
Note: The products listed below are a selection of those I looked at in April, 2019. This information may change at any time, so please read the labels and use the guide to choosing a cereal in conjunction with this list. You can also download the database of nutrition info of all the products I looked at here if you want to see how your choices fared.
Super Foods Super Pulses Creamy Chicken Carbonara

Made with lentil pasta instead of the traditional, this meal has one of the smallest serving sizes (300g) and met the criteria for kilojoules, protein, fibre and saturated fat. It’s also gluten free if you need it.
Healthy Choice Wholegrains Thai Beef & Basil Stir Fry with Brown Rice and Quinoa

With a serve size of 340g, this was high in protein (5.2g per 100g) and fibre (1.5g per 100g) and low in sat fat (0.5g per 100g). However, if you need to go easy on sodium, this is not a choice for you – it has one of the higher sodium levels of the bunch (310mg per 100g) due to the Asian sauces.
Quorn Cottage Pie

Made with Quorn mince, this cottage pie is a vegetarian option, but you’d never know it! With a serve size of 300g, it also met the criteria for kilojoules, protein, saturated fat and fibre. An all-round a great choice.
Healthy Choice Wholegrains Slow Cooked Mexican Beef with Brown Rice and Quinoa

Another one from Healthy Choice here. It’s a little higher in protein, but it still met the criteria for protein, saturated fat and fibre and comes with a 4 star health star rating. It’s serve size is 250g, so just start with the protein and vegies.
Woolworths Delicious Nutritious Beef & Tomato Casserole

Woolies have done a really good job with this range. The beef & tomato casserole was their best though. It has one of the highest serves of vegies (3!), a 4.5 star rating and met my criteria for kilojoules, saturated fat and fibre. Just make sure you eat the protein first with this one – as there are so many vegies, it’s a bit light on the protein compared to the other options listed here.
Lean Cuisine Steam Spicy Meatball Arrabbiata Spaghetti

2 serves of vegies in this one which is great. It met the most of my criteria (kilojoules, protein, saturated fat and fibre) and the sodium wasn’t even too far off (with 178mg/100g).
Super Foods Slow Cooked Lamb Ragu Wholemeal Pappardelle

Another good option from Super Foods. This ragu has a serve size of 350g which is a little bigger than I’d like, but it met the criteria for kilojoules, protein, saturated fat and is made with wholegrain pasta.
So, that’s it… They’re my picks! I would love to hear from you about what areas of the supermarket you’d like me to cover next, just comment below. Lastly, if you want to check out other shopping guides, click the shopping tab at the top right of this page.
