The Pouch Reset – Does it really work???
February 17, 2019As an LWAS Community member, you have exclusive access to my top product picks. This means you can be sure you’re choosing the best options when choosing a protein bar or protein ball.
This was by no means an exhaustive list of all the bars and balls on the market (that would be almost impossible!) If you haven’t yet read my guide to protein bars and balls, click here to read it now – it gives you step-by-step guidance for reading labels of the bars in your supermarket.
Note: The products listed below are a selection of those I looked at in January, 2019. This information may change at any time, so please read the labels and use the guide to choosing a protein bar or ball in conjunction with this list.
Kez’s Kitchen Free & Naked Choc Crunch Protein Bar

These Kez’s Kitchen bars pack a nutritional punch in the perfect little sleeve-sized portion. In a 25g bar, you get less than 100kcal (358kJ) but still get 5g protein and 2g fibre. They have a 4 star health rating and are made from simple real ingredients with no added sugar.
Carmen’s Bliss Balls – Orange, cacao & poppy seed

These are my favourites for a number of reasons: they are made with real ingredients only, they are easy to portion off in the right size, they’re vegan and gluten free for those who need it, and they have a 4.5 star health rating. The only problem is that they are lower in protein than the others because they don’t have the added whey protein. For a 20g serve (1 ball) you’ll get ~300kJ, ~2g protein and ~2g fibre.
The Bar Counter Protein Bar – Chocolate Brownie Crunch

With less than 600kJ per serve (560kJ to be exact) and 10.7g protein and a 5-star health rating, this is a great choice. The protein comes from whey and soy. The only downsides are that it’s a 40g serve, so you might find you only need half for a snack and there are also some artificial sweeteners (maltitol) which may not go well with everyone.
Aussie Bodies Lo Carb Whip’d Bar – Chocolate

If you like the taste of a more traditional protein bar, then this is a great choice for a number of reasons. These are smaller and lighter than most of the others which makes them a good option post-sleeve. In a 30g bar with only 100kcal (417kJ) you get a massive 9g of protein and 4g fibre. The only drawback with these are the number of ingredients including artificial sweeteners, so if you want a more natural ‘real food’ snack this isn’t it.
Carmens Protein Bar – Salted Dark Chocolate & Almond

This is a great option but you’ll need to adjust the serve size. These bars are 40g and have 856kJ so they’re best split in half. Even if you only eat half this bar, you’ll still get 5.5g protein and 2g fibre.
Nice & Natural Protein Whole Seed Bars – Vanilla & Sesame

In a 30g bar there is 624kJ (~150kcal), almost 7g protein and 4g fibre. This one comes with a 3.5 star health rating, which isn’t quite as good as the others, but it’s still a great option.
Planet Food Vegan Protein Bar – Raw Cacao, Quinoa & Choc Chip

Last, but not least, this is another good option. Split this in half like the Carmen’s bar to make it a better sleeve-size. Even when you split this in half, you get only ~350kJ and a big 5g protein. It’s just not quite as good as the Carmen’s as it’s lower in fibre.
So, that’s it… They’re my picks! I would love to hear from you about what areas of the supermarket you’d like me to cover next, just comment below. Lastly, if you want to check out other shopping guides, click the shopping tab at the top right of this page.

I have always avoided these bars even thought i would like a “muesli” type bar sometimes because I thought they were too high in sugar, but I might give some of these a go. Especially now that I am having trouble maintaining at my current weight.
Thanks Zoe!
Glad you liked it Fiona! Portion size with these (and all snacks really) is always the key – you want something that fills you up and keeps you satisfied but isn’t too big. Let us know how you like them when you try one! Zoe
