Super simple fluid recipes

Super simple fluid recipes

Initially after your sleeve gastrectomy you’ll be on fluids only. In our clinic our surgeons prefer 2 weeks for this phase, but yours may be different. During the fluids phase you can have anything smooth that will go through a straw. These fluid recipes are super simple and very easy for you to modify to your tastes. The drinks shouldn’t replace your protein drinks, but they can provide a bit more variety for you throughout the day.

Almost a Pina Colada

1 tbsp lime juice
250ml unsweetened coconut water
1 sprig of mint, lightly crushed

Combine all in a glass, leave to sit for a few minutes so the mint infuses. Serve, drink and pretend there is rum in there…

** This recipe is also great if you make a big batch then freeze into ice block moulds.

Red Juice

1 small pre-cooked beetroot (e.g Love Beets) or ½ raw beetroot, scrubbed & trimmed
2 small carrots, scrubbed & trimmed
1 orange, peeled and quartered
1cm piece of ginger, peeled

Place all ingredients through a juicer. Strain to remove any “bits” then serve.
You can also use a Nutribullet or similar but you may need to add a little water for extra liquid

** This is a great way to use any dying fruit or veg you have in the fridge. Experiment with a range of combinations.

Summer bliss

3 tbs mango nectar
½ cup milk
3 tbs yoghurt

Blend all until smooth then serve.

Choose whichever yoghurt you like best (full fat is okay). Greek yoghurts are highest in protein so make a great option.

Do try this at home…

  • You can add a clear and tasteless protein powder to any of the recipes above. Try Beneprotein or Bodie’z Clear Protein Powder
  • You can also add your fibre supplement (Benefiber works well as it’s also clear and tasteless).
  • Often making your drinks really cold makes them easier to drink. Add lots of ice, or freeze then sip slowly as they defrost.
  • Always remember to sip really slowly and consistently throughout the day so you don’t make yourself feel uncomfortable or put too much pressure on the wound.
